Perhaps one of history’s best war films, and without a doubt the definitive submarine film, Das Boot (The Boat), will be screened at the former submarine base Dora 1 on Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of March.
The screenings are a part of the official celebrations for the centennial jubilee of the Norwegian submarine forces. In addition to the screenings of Das Boot there will be an opportunity to take a closer look at one the navy’s submarines (even inside), listen to lectures and see a historical exhibition.
On the film:
Director Wolfgang Petersen’s masterpiece has a unique position in our cultural and historical consciousness, both for those who experienced the Second World War and for us in the generations after. Das Boot is an epic and spectacular film, but first and foremost it’s the nerve-shattering realism and the intense drama inside the cramped vessel that makes the film such a strong experience.
The film depicts the crew onboard the submarine U-96, going on a mission in the Atlantic sea through to the Strait of Gibraltar, fighting both British destroyers and the claustrophobia in the depths of the ocean. Petersen, who had his big break with Das Boot, put such an emphasis on historical accuracy that he had the captain of the actual U-96 as a consultant on the film. To give the actors a feel for life in a submarine, Petersen held them indoors for the entire 63 day shooting of the film. By almost exclusively being told through the eyes of the crew, Das Boot is a credible and nuanced account of German submariners in battle.
