French vineyards have traditionally ruled in the world of wines. Therefore, when news broke in the 70s that wine was being produced in California, it must have seemed like a joke to snobbish palates. Wine connoisseur Steven Spurrier goes to Napa to find out if it is true what the rumours say about the fine wine from the Wild West. Convinced that they can not equal the French ones, he challenges them to a blindfold test.
Bottle Shock is a wonderful and refreshing little film. The true story about the wine adventure in Napa is told in a charming, at times almost naïve, way that really suits the film. It glides along in a laid back tempo, while the audience gets thirstier and thirstier. Also, an Alan Rickman in top form means there isn’t a dull moment.
