Six-year-old Jin and her younger sister Bin live with their mother in a small apartment in the big city of Seoul. One day they have to go and stay with an alcoholic aunt while the mother goes searching for their father. Before leaving, she gives them a piggy bank and tells them they will receive a coin for every time they are nice to their aunt. When the piggy is full she will return.
This is a bittersweet human drama. Although quieter, it resembles the fantastic Nobody Knows (Hirokazu Koreeda 2004, shown at Kosmorama 2005). The film’s strength lies in the extraordinary achievements of Jin and Bin. These girls will come to learn a lot about adult doubleness and betrayal. We are moved by the way they develop and grow with responsibility. Their journey finally ends at the grandparents in the countryside. Here, they learn more about the meaning of family bonds and hard work.
