The year is 1978. Pinochet rules Chile. John Travolta rules the dance floor. The unscrupulous criminal Raul is obsessed with Travolta’s character from Saturday Night Fever, Tony Manero. He sees the film time and again, until he knows every line and step by heart. When staging his own version of the film, he will walk over corpses to get it the way he wants. When a national contest is announced to decide who the John Travolta of Chile is, Raul is ready to win at all costs. The psychopathic protagonist of this film isn’t someone you want to identify with. But he is a fascinating study – from a safe distance.

Tony Manero is produced on a relatively low budget and is technically rather scrappy. The casting, though, is excellent. Without it ever being spelled out, the parallels between Pinochet’s reign of terror and Raul’s dancing steps are easily drawn.
