Tokyo Sonatais a fascinating drama about a dysfunctional family and their claustrophobic web of secrets and lies, with sudden jolts of comic relief. The family members all struggle in one way or the other, especially when it comes to keeping up appearances. Something that proves to be very difficult when father loses his job…
Kiyoshi Kurosawa, former horror film director, impresses with this complex family drama. It deals with themes such as isolation, living on lies, shame and the price of keeping up appearances in an entertaining and tragicomic way. When least expecting it, you’ll find yourself bubbling with laughter, usually at the same time as having sympathy for the more or less sorry characters. Tokyo Sonata is well acted all around, but Teruyuki Kagawa is outstanding as the family father who is trying his best to maintain some dignity.
