Granddad Giorgi never tires of telling his two young grandchildren fantastic stories about their father; the super hero Dato who is on a highly dangerous and secret mission. Truth is, though, that their father is a meteorologist who has spent the last couple of years behind bars. When he eventually returns he has a hard time living up to the image that has been created of him. He is no tough guy, so when he tries to win back his wife from her suitors by employing physical strength, he can only fail.
But then one day, Dato discovers that not only can he observe the forces of nature, he also has the ability to control them. This comes in handy against the mafia, and a beautiful rainbow has never been a bad way of winning the heart of a woman. Magic realism, together with hints of surrealism, has been typical of films from the Caucasus region. The Rainbowmaker is a good example of this.
