The young Indian woman Fausta is ill with a disease contracted from her mother’s breast milk. It is a condition that is common among women who were abused or raped during the regime in Peru from 1980 to 2000. To protect Fausta against sexual abuse, her mother has inserted a potato into her vagina. When the latter dies, Fausta’s life changes dramatically. She has to meet the world, take command of her own life and body, take responsibility – the potato must out.
The Milk of Sorrow is a peculiar story, narrated in a style one could label Indian magic realism – a quiet, simple and unobtrusive film, but also tight, precise and with splendid images. Still, it is Fausta’s destiny that makes it so poignant. It is a warm film, even though its subject is a heavy and painful one. And it contains one of the most poetic and beautifully symbolic end scenes I have seen in a long, long time.
