A young teacher moves from Prague to work in a village school. He befriends the widow Marie and her teenage son who needs extra help in maths. But when Marie makes certain advances on him, the newly arrived teacher withdraws and she is left confused.
Director Bohdan Sláma won an award at Kosmorama in 2006 for his film Something Like Happiness. The Country Teacher is set in lighter surroundings; we are in the open Czech countryside, it is a warm late summer, and the cornfields are still golden. But we recognise the director’s insight into the human mind and nature. He creates vivid, complex characters with a firm grasp of detail; a look – or a look in the wrong direction. Through its intersecting relations of love and desire, this film treats subjects such as prejudice, abuse, guilt and reconcilement.
