The aging matriarch Hélene is visited by three adult children and grandchildren at the family home in the countryside. Once again the house and garden abound with life; however, Hélene knows that the old days are irrevocably gone. In view of her own inevitable end, she divides up the valuable paintings by their famous uncle Paul and the design furniture. Her efficiency is almost irritating, but it all becomes reality sooner than any of them could imagine.
Summer Hours is a typical French family drama with lots of dialogue and solid acting. Juliette Binoche plays a worldly designer living in New York; her younger brother is a successful business man in Asia, while her older brother still lives in France. As most siblings they have conflicting opinions about the inheritance, and sentimentality is unequally distributed among them. Summer Hours is a film about recognisable feelings of loss, nostalgia and the collision between dream and reality.
