Santi is a teenager who suffers from a rare skin condition that makes him intolerant to sunlight. He and his mother decide to move from the big city to a small village up north. There, due to the deep woods and lofty hillsides, sunlight is restricted. Not long after their arrival strange and violent things start happening, and some of the locals soon suspect that Santi is a vampire.
This is a terrific horror film of the old kind. The lines between good and evil become blurred, and we never quite sympathise with the characters that we traditionally are expected to. The struggle between light and dark rages, but the dichotomy is turned on its head when Santi flees from the sun and into the safe haven of darkness. Shiver is simply a great piece of film craft and is just as scary as it should be. I didn’t think they made them like this any more.
