Generation gap and the contrast between city and countryside are expressed through close relations in this well made Turkish family drama. The characters struggle with psychological issues and with making their lives add up. Above all, they struggle with seeing each other. The story revolves around an old woman who staggers away from the countryside and her displaced grandchildren who stagger away from the city. In a sense, they are all escaping something. Granny suffers from Alzheimer’s and becomes a big problem to handle for her three adult children in the city. They have more than enough taking care of their own lives, depressions and losses. This might sound somewhat heavy and dreary, but this film is a gem!
Pandora´s Box is well composed with beautiful, sunny images and has a nice rythm to it. Tsilla Chelton is formidable in the role as the confused old grandmother who is gradually disappearing into herself.
