Terence Davies’ Of Time and the City is a declaration of love to his birthplace, Liverpool. At the same time it laments a lost past – for city and director alike. Davies tells us about his own childhood and upbringing, religion and class background, and above all his relationship with film. His happiest memories are set to popular culture, and he illustrates his points of view by a consistent and crafty use of pop songs and musical acts.
Of Time and the City is both an in-depth and personal documentary – full of humour and sarcasm – and a beautiful picture poem from one of the great masters of British film. Terence Davies belongs to the same generation as Peter Greenaway and Derek Jarman. Of Time and the City displays a kinship with these two directors, both in form and in content.
