One day the truck driver Fjodor is driving through the Russian countryside, he has to stop before a funeral party in a tiny village. Someone tells him that the village teacher has passed away. Fjodor knows the place by name, but he used to know the teacher better. Many years earlier they had a brief affair that resulted in a baby girl. Her name is Mukha (”the fly”), now a teenager with a rather negative attitude towards her new guardian, Fjodor, who decides to stay in the village.

Mukha is this year’s Russian film gem, one that definitely strikes both heart and mind. It is craftily directed by debutant Vladimir Kott, with beautiful photography, and the leading actors Aleksej Kravtsjenko and Aleksandra Tjuftej (in her first role) are outstanding. They are surrounded by a colourful cast of characters that one can’t help becoming fond of, also the bad apples among them.
