The year is 1966 and it is an idyllic summer in Quebec. School holidays have just begun and Elise, a girl in her teens, and her little brothers look forward to many wonderful weeks ahead of them. Then Elise witnesses something she wasn’t meant to see or hear, something she doesn’t quite understand the reach of. When she tells about it, the bottom falls out of her parent’s seemingly happy marriage. The three children have different ways of expressing their despair and they employ different strategies to live with the unthinkable; mummy packing her bags and leaving.
Mommy is at the Hairdresser’s owes its quality to the nuanced and realistic portrayal of how the children react to their parents’ marital crisis. The film convincingly and elegantly recaptures the atmosphere of the1960s and is a delight to the eye.
