Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas have been co-directing, on an off, since 1995. For this production they have mainly recruited unknown actors and shot on location in the outskirt slums of Sao Paolo. We follow four fatherless brothers who, despite deep poverty, try to stay away from crime. ”Linha de passe” is the name of a Brazilian football club, but it also indicates that this is a film about growing up. In contrast to City of God and Tropa de elite, two recent Brazilian contributions to the genre, Salles chooses to deal with serious topics without reverting to spectacular film effects and explicit violence.
Brothers Dario, Dinho, Denis and Reginaldo all struggle with their own problems, but they also share the hope of one day leaving the slum and getting a decent life. Dario is played by the now 18-year-old Vinicius de Olivera, who also played in Walter Salles critically acclaimed film Central station from 1998.
