Julia wakes up one morning in a pool of blood. She knows as little as we do about what has happened, but a man is dead and Julia’s boyfriend is mortally wounded. The pregnant woman is sentenced to prison for murder. When her son Tomas is born, they are both transferred to the prison maternity ward.
The amazing human ability to adapt and find meaning in the most difficult conditions is a central theme in this film. Julia could very well indulge in bitterness, but chooses to focus on the here and now instead. She forms strong emotional bonds behind the prison walls. Julia becomes a symbol of the maternal instinct, fighting as a lioness to keep her son. Martina Gusman impresses in the leading part, a physical and psychological achievement based on emphatic acting without exaggerated gestures.
