Il Divo draws a satirical portrait of the controversial Italian politician Giulio Andreotti – many times prime minister – and his web of alliances in an utterly corrupt Italy. The film begins with an overload of names, connections and recent Italian history. Keeping track of all this information is near impossible; just let yourself be swept along by director Sorrentino’s visual power and eminent use of music.
In contrast to the film’s baroque excessiveness the quiet main character, Andreotti, appears as a complex and ambiguous person. He pulls the strings of power, extending to the mafia as well as the church, with an expressionless face that is frightening, fascinating and enigmatic at the same time. The centre of power is an eerily lonely place.
