Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, one where nearly half the population is below 14 years of age. One million children are orphans, almost entirely because of AIDS. In the absence of adults they have to look after each other as best they can but the future looks bleak.
In I Am Because We Are, we meet children and adults who tell us their stories. We meet a country where tradition and culture stand in the way of development and contribute to the spread of HIV, malaria and tuberculosis. We are also presented to dreams and hopes for the future, and the film indicates how the rest of the world can and should help.
”You must not endure so awfully well, the injustice that only the others befell” Arnulf Øverland, Norwegian poet.
