Home begins in idyll. A family of five have their home in the countryside, surrounded by pleasant hills. Their closest neighbour, a four-lane motorway not in use, is perfect for playing field hockey. The inner and outer peace and harmony is too good to be true. One day some men in helmets appear with road construction machines. When the road is given a new surface, we know what comes next. The family refuses to move from the house and tries instead to adapt to a life of constant traffic and noise.
The film changes scenery; from the open space outside the house to the constricted space within its walls. This change also applies to the characters, and the film turns into a tight and claustrophobic psychological drama. Isabelle Huppert’s cold but intense presence on the screen is particularly effective in this film.
