Since 2005, documentarist Hallvard Bræin has attempted to understand what ‘s driving force behind one of the greatest artists in Norway, and how he has been making world-class paintings for more than 60 years. The result is a scrutinizing and challenging documentary about Håkon Bleken, one of the most famous painters in the Kingdom.
In Håkon Bleken, painter, Bræin follows Bleken on a journey around Europe, where the artist gets to experience his idols Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso and Matthias Grünewald. Back home in Trondheim, he catches glimpses of Bleken’s childhood, which was very decisive for his art. Through conversation and looking at old family photos, Bleken describes his difficult relations to his brother and father through his youth, and he is coming across as knowledgeable, socially engaged and challenging in his dedication as an artist.
