This is not a film for beginners. Its slow and demanding rhythm can be a test of patience, some might say it’s outright tedious. But if you manage to sit back and find its pulse, El cielo, la tierra y la lluvia becomes something of a meditative experience. You will also discover that there actually is quite a lot going on. However, this film is more about creating an atmosphere of isolation and solitude than telling a story.

The few characters all live on the same wet, remote island on the south coast of Chile, it could be anywhere really. We meet the protagonist Ana who lives with her invalid mother, the man she works for, as well as her friend Veronika and her sister. We aren’t told much about any of them and their dialog is sparse. There are many gaps to fill for the spectator in this demanding film. On the other hand, the images of the long takes are exquisitely beautiful – perhaps the main parts are played by the landscape, the rain and the wind?
