Danny and Jack live with their mother, Else, who suffers from severe depressions. Danny escapes domestic claustrophobia through music, drugs and women. But when the mother dies, he has to get his act together and take care of his mentally disturbed little brother. Jack refuses to accept that their mother is gone. He finds his own peculiar ways of coping with the loss and the loneliness.
Matthew Thompson’s directorial debut is a wonderful film about loss and love. It is a look into a deranged mind, but just as much a film about two brothers who refuse to give up on each other. Dummy finds its place within a British tradition of quirky, almost Gothic films. Names such as Nicolas Roeg and Alfred Hitchcock spring to mind. What might have happened, or rather, not happened, if Norman Bates had a big brother?
