Delta is a beautiful, poetic and – in a good way – pretentious drama. A quiet young man returns to the river delta he left as a child. The landscape is a labyrinth of channels, small islands and overgrown swamps, a landscape where the inhabitants are isolated from the outside world. It turns out he has an unknown sister. They find each other and start building a house together on piles in the middle of the river, far from other people. But the locals disapprove of the young man and his relationship with his sister.
The unobtrusive and visually beautiful style of the film harmonises with its content. Here, drama and suspense takes place on an inner plane more than through external action. Despite the quiet waters of the delta and its slow and somewhat melancholic way of life, we suspect conflict and impending storm. The film received the prestigious FIPRESCI Award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.
