Dean Spanley is a clever and peculiar film, a magical mixture of wine, dogs and eccentric behaviour in Edwardian London. Fisk is a young man who lives in the shadow of his old and grumpy father. To entertain him, his son brings him along to a lecture on the transmigration of souls. Fisk Junior observes with interest that the district dean, Dean Spanley, is among the crowd. They are introduced to each other and the surprises soon start piling up. Not only is the dean interested in the mysteries of transmigration, he is actually possessed. In addition, he has an almost ecstatic palate for Hungarian Tokay wine. When young Fisk procures some of the finest vintage Tokays, Dean Spanley starts reminiscing about his former life – as a dog!
Such material requires precise direction and accomplished acting. In that respect, director Toa Fraser has found the perfect couple in Sam Neill as the dean and Peter O’Toole as Fisk senior.
