Heavy protests and demonstrations erupted during the 1968 Democratic National Conference in Chicago. The unrest was mainly directed at the Vietnam War; also, the assassination of Robert Kennedy meant that the activists had lost their presidential candidate. In the wake of what turned into a street fight, eight demonstrators were charged with inciting the riots. A whole nation followed the lengthy trial.
Brett Morgen has used the actual transcripts from the trial and animated its proceedings. Mixed with archive footage of the demonstrations, a juxtaposition that works well, this has become a highly entertaining documentary that really engages the spectator. Famous names such as Nick Nolte, Mark Ruffalo, and Hank Azaria from The Simpsons lend their voices to the animated scenes.
