Birdwatchers is a fascinating film that mixes fiction with anthropological documentary. A group of Guarani-Kaiowa Indians, lead by the shaman Nadio, defy society by breaking out of the reservation and settling on a piece of land where there once was dense jungle. It marks the end of a search for their roots, they have come home. There is only one problem; this land is now part of a large plantation.
In a subtle way, the film balances human relations, generation conflicts and mutual fascination between Indians and Brazilians. The main point, however, is the larger conflict: The systematic genocide of Indians, throughout the American continent, that has been going on for almost 600 years. They are rapidly becoming an endangered people; desperate, frustrated and with very high suicide rates. Separating fact from fiction is not easy in this film. Who is to blame?
