In addition to playing the lead, Ed Harris has written, produced and directed Appaloosa. He and Viggo Mortensen are two ”lonesome riders”, who end up protecting a small town that is being tyrannised by ruthless ranch owners. We needn’t say more about the plot. The film is exquisitely photographed and, as usual, the acting is perfect. Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen seem to enjoy themselves as best pals, and Jeremy Irons convinces as the main thug. The last time such a nice guy portrayed such a bad one was, perhaps, Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West.
Appaloosa is both well-narrated and funny, not a way-too-cool humour, but one that sieves through the dialog and characters’ interaction – especially Harris and Mortensen.
