Omeris is a poor Turkish-Cypriot shepherd boy. His father sends him off to live with a Greek-Cypriot family who can provide better for him. Here, he soon falls in love with his new ”sister” Rhodou.
Akamas is based on a true story. The film draws up the dramatic history of Cyprus; the struggle for liberation against the British in the 50s, the polarisation between the island’s Greek and Turkish populations after the 1967 military coup in Greece, and the attempted coup by Greek Cypriot nationalists in 1974 which subsequently lead to the Turkish invasion. This chain of events resulted in the island being divided into a Greek and a Turkish part. In the middle of the conflict, Omeris and Rhodou fight for the right to love each other. The film elegantly balances the love story and the larger geo-political context. Akamas is a modern Romeo and Juliet story, a touching drama where two individuals defy their own families and clans, thereby symbolising a different way – one of dialog and love.
