The Strength of Water takes place in a small Maori community on the north coast of New Zealand. Director Armagan Ballantyne uses local inhabitants instead of professional actors, lending the film an authenticity that befits the beautiful and raw nature.

This is a film about grief and sorrow, about how a family copes with the loss of a dear one. It is also a warm film about moving on, not in the physical sense of a road-movie, we are talking inner travel. These people stay put and move on the spot. However, their moods are effectively underscored by the stunning surroundings as well as heavy skies and rain, all to the credit of the director and the photographer.
