Tómas and Helena are a married Chilean couple living in Barcelona. They are busy and career oriented people, but all comes to a halt with the bad news of Helena’s little brother Jordi. He has disappeared and is feared dead back in Chile. Shortly after, they are approached by a young woman. It is Jordi’s girlfriend Sandra, the last person to see him before he disappeared. Sandra awakens strong emotions in both Tómas and Helena, and a triangular drama with an uncertain ending starts to develop.

199 Tips to Be Happy is about a grief process where loss is quenched by desire. It is a subtle film with a complex and nuanced emotional landscape. The images are exquisite; the light is both delicate and threatening at the same time, and the camera action is unusual. In sum, this creates a dense, suspenseful atmosphere.
